Si può fare
It can be done

In 1992, Angelo Branduardi released Si può fare, a song celebrating free will and life’s possibilities.
In 2001, the cooperative Il Villaggio di Esteban opened a residence named after the song, reflecting its spirit.

Beyond hospitals, there exists a network of small-scale initiatives which support people with psychiatric disorders in regaining autonomy.
One of these is Si può fare, a residential home in Salerno, Italy, for women with psychiatric conditions, offering a safe space for healing and rebuilding their lives.

I spent time with three residents: Anna T. and Anna D. live with schizophrenia, Carmelina R. with major depression. Despite different diagnoses, they share the same fears while trying to reclaim independence. Daily tasks like getting up, eating, washing, going outside remain difficult, despite the constant support of 24/7 caregivers.
Yet progress is not always possible. Anna T., for example, arrived shortly after the apartment foundation and never left; what was meant to be temporary refuge became her permanent home.

In Southern Italy, where mental health stigma persists, many women have faced marginalization, even exploitation-sometimes by their own families-trapped in a cycle of institutionalization.
This is where these initiatives play a crucial role, offering instead a path to recovery and autonomy.

Si può fare offers a different approach, one where caregivers take the time to support each resident with patience and dignity, helping them reclaim their sense of self.
